Cat breed: Siamese – Part 6

Our Siamese cat is an impostor, disguising himself as a Siamese in order to get preferential treatment. This pseudo-Siamese got his start outside in the cold of early March under one of the buildings on our property. Not unusual in our neighborhood, a litter of feral kittens was born in spring. I never saw his mother and have no idea who the father was. The others in the litter were oddly-striped or all black. Two of the striped ones had circular stripes on their sides, a pattern of markings I’d never seen before. But the Siamese-looking kitten stood out among them all, and I kept an eye on him from a distance as they got big enough to come out from under the building into the yard to play.
As they got older and more courageous, they started a nightly single-file trek across the yard to our main house for the food we started to put out for them. When we realized the mother cat had abandoned the kittens, we provided meals for them in our patio. All of the kittens remained frightened and aloof as they came to the house out of desperation, but the Siamese seemed to have a much more trusting personality. I called him Thai and coaxed him into my care.
Thai made his way to the main house more often than his siblings, and I soon started urging him to come inside for food. Even as a small kitten, he would “talk” to us in that familiar Siamese way. We had owned other Siamese cats in the past and knew the vocal characteristics. The voice was typical in that Siamese sing-songy kind of a way. He’s got deep blue eyes that seem to cross now and then, a beautiful wedge-shaped head with a deep brown, velvety mask and chocolate brown ears, legs, and tail. He has a regal stance that says, “Look at me. I’m handsome. Love me.”
When he was about eight months old, we took him to the vet for neutering and shots, and the vet commented that he was a beautiful Siamese. Since then, he’s grown very tall and ever more gorgeous. The other day, I presented him with a bright blue collar since he is now an “only cat.” Half an hour later, I found it in the laundry room where he had unceremoniously rid himself of it. I guess he thinks he’s handsome enough without it. He has become my favorite companion, seldom out of sight. Wherever I am, he’s usually somewhere nearby. He’s got a lovely personality, and whether or not he’s a genuine Siamese, he’s as nice a cat as you’ll ever find.
