  • Cat breeds: Persian – Part 1

One of the different breeds of cats is the Cat breed: Persian. Owing to its long and fluffy hair, at first this breed of cats were known as long haired cats, then they were named after their place of origin and are now being called as Persian cats or Persian long haired cats. Let us learn more about this Persian Cat breed.

    BREED DESCRIPTION:

Persian cats have beautiful, long flowing coats, with a short compact, well-balanced, heavily boned body and short, thick legs. They have large, round, expressive eyes set wide apart, and a broad round head with small ears. They weigh generally between 7 and 12 lbs.

However there is a distinction between two face types: The modern flat-faced Persian commonly seen in shows and the traditional doll-faced Persian. The traditional doll-faced Persian has a more proportional face, with the mouth and nose located well in front of the eyes, while retaining the basic broad, round, and flat look.

Perhaps the most striking feature of the Persian cat is its full, long coat. This unique look is created by a combination of long undercoat and long topcoat. Persians come in a variety of coat colors. The seven color divisions are: Solid Color: White, Black, Blue, Cream, Red, Chocolate, and Lilac. This breed has a life span of 15 years.

    CHARACTERISTICS AND TEMPERAMENT:

These cats make excellent pets and companions, having a loving nature. Persians are very affectionate, but relatively quiet. An alert, gentle cat, Persians can be both playful and affectionate. They are more inclined to a sedate lifestyle and feel most comfortable in calm, quiet surroundings. We have found Persians to be very affectionate and loving, and they get along well with other cats and our dogs. Persian cats like nothing better than to cuddle up and sleep next to you if you happen to sit down, and they make excellent bed buddies! Please take care they are not let outside alone, as their gentle temperament makes it prone to get attacked by other cats or dogs.

    GROOMING NEEDS:

Owing to the presence of long coats, Persian cats require daily combing to prevent hair fall and matting. They will also need an occasional bath. Because of the long coat and docile temperament, it’s particularly important to keep Persian cats indoors. Persian cats do require regular grooming and bathing to keep their coats clean and un-matted. A daily brushing is recommended making sure to check for mats behind the ears and under the arms. Persian cats also may require that you wipe their eyes on a daily basis with a warm wash cloth (Due to their basically watery eyes).

    CONCLUSION:

Undeniably beautiful, elegant and regal, the Persian is ideal if you want a cat that’s sweet, devoted, docile, affectionate and laid-back.
