Love your cats, save your money: Tips for the frugal feline lover – Part 1
No CommentsThe great thing about cats is that they are relatively easy to entertain and maintain. Cats may be known for their attitudes, but they really are easy to please. The only 3 things that you really need to spend your money on for cats is food, litter, and vet care.
Once you get past the initial vaccinations and a neuter/spay, cats only require a yearly checkup with the vet and a rabies vaccination every two years. Even spay/neuters aren’t as expensive as they were before, because many clinics offer free, or low cost procedures. Check with your local animal shelters for more details.
Cat food is obviously a requirement. Buy in bulk to save money, invest in an airtight container or large trash can with a lid to keep it fresh. This could last a very long time with a single cat, or even a multi cat household. Feed your cat some inexpensive tuna as a treat from time to time for a happy cat.
Cat litter, for indoor cats, is also important. Even this is an area you can save money by shopping smart. Several brands offer redeemable points on their containers for coupons or other cat supplies. Petsmart and Petco also have refillable containers, you buy the container, use it, and bring your empty container back for a cheaper refill.
Cat toys are not essential for you to buy. You can make toys to stimulate and entertain your cat from things already in your home. String, tin foil rolled into balls, a flashlight, or just a warm blanket are all things your cat will enjoy.
